Eyes on the Page (Reading) (0.6 CEU/5 SEMIs)
Students in all content areas need to read A LOT! Reading helps students learn the material, develop their vocabularies, and become fluent readers who comprehend what they're reading. Yet most students spend very little time reading at school (less than 12 minutes a day), many don't read at home, and many don't comprehend what they read for school. In part caused by students' chronically low vocabularies which make reading difficult, this trend is especially troubling given the volume of reading required on the MCT2 and Subject Area Tests. The morning half of this session will provide concrete strategies for engaging students with text before, during, and after reading that will boost students' achievement in all content areas. The afternoon will focus on exciting, hands-on activities for vocabulary instruction that helps students to read the texts they are assigned and learn the concepts and vocabulary in all content areas. The session is appropriate for teachers in grades 2-12.
